Often used in outdoor gardens and in European foyers, the variety of wall fountains available on the open market has increased in recent years to reflect the sleek, modern shapes and materials that dominate contemporary art and industrial design. Choosing an appropriate wall fountain is similar to choosing a work of art to hang on your wall, or choosing a tabletop water fountain— but this particular choice has more complexities and issues than either.
Size Matters
The first things you need to consider are all in regards to size: the size of the room, the size of the walls, and the size of other art in the room. How much white space is on the wall in question? How much white space is on the other walls in the room? Are there any other focal points that the fountain will be in competition with, such as a television or a large wall hanging? Do you want something that will quietly accent a wall, or make a bold and graphic statement? Answering these questions will allow you to make an informed decision on exactly how large and prominent a wall fountain you want to purchase.
Also keep in mind that the larger the fountain, the more water will be circulating, and the louder the sound of falling water will be. That’s not to say that large fountains are overly loud— just that an increase of water and larger pumping mechanisms will lead to a small and understandable increase in ambient sound.
Consider Shape And Color
If you have other artwork or framed images up on your walls, take note of the shape and style of the art and its frames. Is everything squared? Are the materials used organic— like wood or stone or fabric— or are they more industrial, like glass and metal? Do you want something that will blend in or stand out? If you want something that will blend in, choose materials and shapes that match what already exists in the room. If you want something to stand out, choose one of the predominant themes to change. If all of the art in a room is framed in black, metallic rectangles, choose a rectangular wall fountain made of a brightly colored metal, like copper.
With these tips, finding the perfect fountain for your wall should be a fun task, less daunting and confusing than before.
