Wall fountains don’t need to be merely ornamental elements in your home. You can use them in lots of different, fun, and functional ways.
Hand washing Basin
If you spend a lot of time in your garden, you might want to think about wall fountains as a place to rinse your hands. You will need a water source readily accessible anyway, so why not make it beautiful?
If you do this you will want to maintain your water fountain meticulously. Don’t use soap in your fountain, and be sure that you clean your filtration apparatus and change the water regularly so your fountain doesn’t become fouled with sand, dirt, and other impurities. You will also want to take advantage of water fountain cleaning products that remove unwanted odors and chemicals from your water, since you will be coming into contact with it regularly.
Keep a hand towel and some fresh-smelling lotion nearby to dry and anoint your hands after washing, to keep them soft and healthy.
Planter
You can remove the hardware from wall fountains—or purchase one that doesn’t have a pump and hose built-in—and use them as planters. The water intake at the bottom of the basin will allow for healthy drainage, and if desired you can set up your fountain so it waters your plants periodically, by adding a separate water reservoir and timer system to the pump. You may find it to be an enjoyable DIY project, and once you’re done you’ll have a very exciting self-watering planter!
Birdbath
Let’s face it, animals get into everything. If you let him, your dog would happily drink out of your fountain. You don’t necessarily want that, but you can easily turn wall fountains into part of an attractive and fun bird playground by making sure that your fountain water is clean and fresh, a nearby birdfeeder is available, and the fountain is placed near bird-friendly plants such as seed-bearing flowers and shade trees. Be sure your plants are native to the area—birds will not be attracted to exotic plants they are not familiar with. To attract the most birds, arrange your plants in dense, layered groupings, providing cover for birds at all heights. Avoid putting your fountain and bird feeder in an overly open space—open ground offers the least food and cover from predators, so birds will instinctively avoid it.
